Human Rights Watch is calling on Thailand to immediately halt the deportation of 26 Karen villagers currently detained in Phetchaburi province. The villagers, members of an ethnic Karen community, risk severe harm if returned to Myanmar given the current political and security situation. Thai authorities, including district, forestry officials, and military personnel, raided the villagers’ community in Ban Pa Deng village on August 10th. The raid occurred within Kaeng Krachan National Park, an area with a history of conflict and human rights concerns. HRW warns that deportation violates international law prohibiting refoulement – the return of individuals to a place where they face persecution. The organization emphasizes the potential for serious danger faced by these individuals in Myanmar. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of ethnic minorities and refugees in Thailand.
