The historic T.M. O'Connor Ranch in Texas has secured a conservation easement, safeguarding almost 6,409 acres of vital coastal prairie. This protection allows ranching operations to continue on the land, blending agriculture with conservation. Funding for this easement came from both federal resources—through the RESTORE program—and private contributions. The prairie serves as a critical habitat for over 300 different species of wildlife and a variety of rare plants. This agreement exemplifies a collaborative approach to preserving ecosystems while simultaneously supporting working lands. The initiative highlights the possibility of balancing conservation goals with the continuation of traditional livelihoods in Texas. The preservation ensures the O’Connor ranching legacy, which began in 1834, will endure for generations to come.
