A 14-year-old girl in Rome potentially avoided a sexual assault by using the international SOS hand signal for help. Two observant police officers noticed the girl making the gesture while she was visibly distressed inside a car. The girl told authorities that her mother’s partner, a 47-year-old Romanian man, had attempted to sexually abuse her, making inappropriate advances and offering gifts. Police quickly apprehended the man after he left a phone store, finding him intoxicated and aggressive. He is currently detained on suspicion of aggravated sexual assault, and multiple alcohol bottles were discovered in the vehicle. The girl has received victim support, and her mother has filed a report alleging repeated domestic violence by the same partner.
