Tanzania’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are poised to benefit from improved access to long-term financing thanks to the country’s inaugural offshore bond. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, the $100 million bond – equivalent to 262.5bn Tanzanian shillings – is being issued through the International Finance Corporation (IFC). This innovative financial instrument is denominated in Tanzanian shillings, a first for the nation’s offshore borrowing. The bond is designed to channel funds directly to SMEs, addressing a critical need for capital. By providing easier access to long-term financing, the initiative aims to stimulate growth and development within Tanzania’s crucial SME sector. This move signifies a significant step towards strengthening the Tanzanian economy and fostering a more robust business environment.
