Tanzania has reached a new milestone in agricultural self-sufficiency, achieving record domestic seed production for the 2023/2024 season. Between 78.6% and 81% of the 71,356 tonnes of seeds used were produced within the country, a significant increase over prior years. This surge in local production directly addresses Tanzania’s historical dependency on imported seeds. The Ministry of Agriculture reports this achievement as a result of sustained efforts to strengthen local seed systems. This development is expected to bolster sustainable agricultural growth nationwide and improve food security. The increased use of domestically produced seeds offers economic benefits to local farmers and reduces vulnerability to external market fluctuations.
