A new article examines the experience of a Han Taiwanese individual grappling with the legacy of Han settler colonialism on the island. The author reflects on how this history is not merely a past event, but a normalized aspect of Taiwan’s present-day systemic racism. The piece argues that even those who benefit from this system – Han Taiwanese people – feel its effects and have a role to play in dismantling it. Recognizing the existing colonial structures is presented as crucial for achieving accountability and addressing historical injustices.
