A new approach to education in Taitung, Taiwan utilizes the eastern coastline and ocean as a dynamic learning environment. Fieldwork and community partnerships are central to this initiative, connecting students with local fisheries and foodways. The program uniquely integrates Taiwan’s maritime history, including the sensitive topic of Green Island’s White Terror heritage. Students actively explore themes of environmental sustainability and the importance of preserving Indigenous knowledge. By engaging with local livelihoods, the curriculum fosters an understanding of cultural preservation and democratic memory. The ocean serves as a catalyst for holistic education, blending history, culture, and environmental awareness.
