Taiwan’s Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for New Zealand’s recent naval transit through the Taiwan Strait. However, Lin Chia-lung also cautioned New Zealand about its future strategic independence concerning China. He argued China’s behavior differs from typical international relations, frequently using economic tools like trade and investment as leverage. The Minister implied New Zealand needs to establish clear “bottom lines” in its dealings with Beijing to safeguard its own autonomy. Lin characterized China as not operating under standard international norms due to its willingness to weaponize economic relationships. The comments serve as both thanks for support and a warning about increasing Chinese influence. He stressed the importance of proactive measures to protect New Zealand’s interests.
