Taiwan is striving for greater self-sufficiency in semiconductor materials, recognizing a critical vulnerability in its supply chain. Despite having strong capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing, Taiwan currently relies heavily on foreign sources for the foundational “materials of materials” – the basic chemical compounds needed to create advanced materials. This dependence poses a risk to the island’s position as a global semiconductor hub. The initiative focuses on securing these upstream resources and developing domestic technologies to bridge the existing gap. Investment is being directed towards research and development, as well as attracting talent to strengthen local expertise. Successfully addressing this challenge is vital for Taiwan's long-term competitiveness and national security in the face of geopolitical uncertainties. The strategy aims to move beyond assembly and testing towards full-cycle domestic production.
