Taiwan is enhancing its maritime surveillance capabilities with the acquisition of uncrewed surface vessels, commonly known as drone boats, from a United States-based company. The Taiwan coastguard’s first dedicated drone-boat program aims to better detect and monitor increasing activity by mainland Chinese vessels near the island. Florida’s Maritime Tactical Systems (Martac) announced the deal on Tuesday, involving an unspecified number of its Devil Ray T24 autonomous boats. Production of these vessels will occur in both the United States and Taiwan. This acquisition signifies Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its defenses and monitoring its surrounding waters. The move comes as concerns grow regarding the persistent presence and activities of mainland Chinese ships in the region. Martac hailed the agreement as a significant development in autonomous maritime technology.
