The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) has reported that a recent Belgrade city funding competition for media content disproportionately awarded funds to tabloids with a history of ethical breaches. Of the 83.9 million dinars allocated, a significant portion went to media outlets frequently violating the journalistic code of ethics. ANEM alleges this outcome undermines efforts to support responsible journalism and raises concerns about transparency in the funding process. The association criticizes the selection criteria and the apparent prioritization of outlets known for sensationalism and biased reporting. This distribution pattern, according to ANEM, effectively rewards unethical practices and hinders the development of quality, independent media in Belgrade. The organization is calling for a review of the competition’s procedures and greater accountability in future funding allocations. This situation highlights ongoing challenges to media freedom and ethical standards within the Serbian media landscape.
