Initial exit poll results indicate a majority of Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to limit the country’s population to 10 million residents. The referendum, initiated by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), saw 55% voting against the cap and 45% in favor. The SVP argued the measure was necessary to prevent overpopulation and strain on infrastructure and the housing market, citing concerns about absorbing a growing influx of migrants. Switzerland is experiencing rapid population growth, currently at 9.1 million, and is projected to reach 10 million by 2035. While most political parties opposed the initiative, public opinion was initially divided. Support for the cap was strongest in rural, German-speaking areas, while cities generally favored continued growth. The SVP has previously launched referendums targeting ethnic minorities, including those concerning burqas and minarets.
