The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has announced new interview committees to vet candidates for additional high court judges, notably excluding any Supreme Court judges from the panels. This marks a departure from traditional judicial hierarchy. The committees will assess candidates for the Lahore, Islamabad, Sindh, and Balochistan High Courts over the next two years. Each committee will draw its judicial strength from the Federal Constitutional Court and the respective high courts. Judge Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi will chair the committees for the Lahore and Islamabad High Courts, while Judge Aamer Farooq will lead those for Sindh and Balochistan. The move, authorized by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, utilizes new rules established earlier this year. The absence of Supreme Court representation is a significant shift in the judge appointment process.
