Following the 30-day arrest of a former presidential candidate accused of defrauding a businessman out of over one million euros, social media saw an outpouring of support alongside threats directed at authorities. One supporter issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the candidate’s release, threatening to “blow up the windows of DIICOT” if the demand wasn’t met. Police subsequently detained the individual making the threat. The supporter has now been admitted to Obregia Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation and care. The incident highlights the intensity of feeling surrounding the arrest and the response of law enforcement to direct threats. Authorities are continuing to monitor online activity related to the case. The former candidate remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
