At least 23 civilians were killed and 19 injured in drone attacks targeting El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in western Sudan, according to the NGO Emergency Lawyers. The attacks, allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, began Wednesday and continued through Thursday morning, hitting residential areas and a funeral gathering. Emergency Lawyers attributes sole responsibility for the strikes to the RSF and has called for an end to attacks on civilians. The city of El Obeid, currently under the control of the Sudanese army, is a key military and administrative hub and has been repeatedly targeted during the ongoing conflict. A food truck driver was also killed when his vehicle was struck near the city’s southern entrance. The attacks come amid a wider conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023 and has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and millions displaced. The RSF has yet to comment on the accusations.
