For three decades, Denmark’s ‘Hus Forbi’ street paper has provided income and support for vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness. Ahead of its 30th anniversary, the paper's current chairman, Simon Nielsen, shared his personal story of living on the streets for 14 years. Nielsen recounted resorting to begging and seeking shelter in trains during harsh winters. He himself began selling ‘Hus Forbi’ whilst homeless, finding the existing systems chaotic and unhelpful. Today, he leads the organization which offers a lifeline to others facing similar struggles, yet still carries the weight of past debts and experiences. The paper aims to empower individuals by providing a means to earn an income and reintegrate into society. ‘Hus Forbi’ represents a unique social enterprise offering opportunity and dignity.
