The past of Romania’s head of the Protection and Protocol Service (SPP), Lucian Pahontu, remains unverified, unlike other intelligence chiefs. Crucial documents potentially detailing Pahontu’s background are held by the Gendarmerie under secrecy protocols. The Gendarmerie was prepared to transfer the archive to the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS), which would have triggered desecretization. However, CNSAS was unable to accept the documents due to a lack of adequate storage facilities. This situation prevents a full assessment of Pahontu’s history, raising concerns about transparency within Romania's security apparatus. The CNSAS Vice-President stated Pahontu is the only service chief not subject to an official vetting process. This lack of access hinders efforts to fully understand the backgrounds of those in key security positions.
