A shortage of medical specialists is significantly impacting healthcare access in the interior of Panama. The Caja de Seguro Social (Social Security Fund), the country’s public healthcare system, is responding to the crisis by proposing a reform of the country’s medical law. As an immediate measure, officials are suggesting training general practitioners to treat specific conditions under the remote supervision of specialists. This strategy aims to extend medical coverage to underserved areas within Panama. Strengthening primary care is also a key component of the proposed solution. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap in specialist availability and improve health outcomes for residents in the interior of Panama.
