Spanish intelligence services warned both Moroccan and Spanish authorities about a planned mass crossing of migrants towards Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the North African coast, according to recently released documents. Premier Sanchez released forty intelligence reports, warnings, and messages related to Ceuta following criticism of his government's handling of the events of July 30th. On July 29th, Spanish intelligence alerted their Moroccan counterparts to plans circulating on social media for migrants to reach Ceuta by swimming along the border fence during a national holiday in Morocco. The Spanish government delegation in Ceuta was also informed about large groups organizing on social media, with a combined follower count of 180,000. Despite these warnings, approximately 72,000 people attempted to enter Spanish territory the following day, resulting in at least 141 deaths. Spain’s Foreign Minister Albares stated he wasn’t warned about the scale of the impending migration, a claim disputed by an internal Defence Ministry document noting a developing migration crisis in Ceuta since July 25th.
