Spain has lost 30% of its firefighting capacity due to insufficient funding for larger, more effective helicopters. Currently, only 31 helicopters are operational, with a recent addition capable of carrying 4,500 liters of water—the rest carry between 1,000 and 2,000 liters. Industry experts attribute the shortfall to a lack of planning and unwillingness to pay the higher costs, up to three times more, for helicopters like the Chinook and Black Hawk. These more capable aircraft are comparable to Russian Kamov helicopters in terms of water-carrying capacity. The situation highlights a critical vulnerability as Spain faces increasing risks from wildfires, exacerbated by climate change. This underinvestment leaves the country less prepared to combat large-scale blazes effectively, potentially leading to more extensive damage.
