The Spanish government has proposed a comprehensive plan to curb smoking, including a ban on smoking on café and restaurant terraces. The proposal, presented by Health Minister Mónica García, also seeks to regulate e-cigarettes and other vapor products with the same restrictions as traditional cigarettes. The legislation aims to extend the smoking ban to various public spaces like sports facilities, universities, pools, and event venues, as well as company vehicles. A 15-meter no-smoking perimeter would be enforced around schools, healthcare facilities, and playgrounds. Nicotine pouches, waterpipes, and heated tobacco products would also fall under these new regulations, driven by the estimated 50,000 smoking-related deaths annually in Spain. The hospitality industry opposes the plan, fearing it will force smokers indoors and impact businesses, while the bill now requires parliamentary approval.
