A recent survey reveals that over 65% of people in Spain believe “lawfare” – the manipulation of the legal system for political ends – is present within the country. The perception of this phenomenon is particularly strong regarding cases impacting the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party). Notably, respondents indicated a greater awareness of legal issues affecting the PSOE compared to those involving the PP (People’s Party). Furthermore, approximately one-third of those surveyed expressed the belief that judges in Spain exhibit a tendency to favor right-wing political interests. This suggests a widespread concern about impartiality and political influence within the judicial system. The findings highlight a growing distrust in the objectivity of legal proceedings, especially in politically sensitive cases. This perception could potentially undermine public confidence in Spain’s democratic institutions.
