After over a century, border controls between Spain and Gibraltar have been lifted, allowing for the free flow of people between the two territories. The change, effective since midnight, follows an agreement reached last year between the European Union, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Gibraltar will now operate within the Schengen Zone, eliminating lengthy wait times previously experienced by commuters. A one-kilometer fence along the border will soon be removed, though passport controls will remain at Gibraltar’s airport and port. Over 15,000 people daily cross the border from the Spanish city of La Linea de la Concepción for work and other purposes. Gibraltar, ceded to Britain in 1713, remains a point of contention with Spain, which still claims sovereignty, however this agreement offers a workable solution for cross-border traffic.
