South Korea announced plans to create a “Future Fund” using unexpected revenue generated from the growth of artificial intelligence and the semiconductor market. The Ministry of Planning and Budget presented the initiative, explaining the surge in corporate tax revenue due to global chip demand. Rather than using these funds for immediate budgetary needs or debt repayment, the government intends to invest in long-term economic growth and maintain competitiveness in the global tech landscape. The fund will prioritize investments in key areas like youth support – including jobs and housing – alongside emerging industries such as SMRs, nuclear fusion, and quantum technology. Improvements to the higher education system are also planned, with adjustments to budget allocation. The proposal will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on September 1st and submitted to the National Assembly on September 3rd.
