South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense is planning to relax restrictions along the Civilian Control Line (CCL), a buffer zone near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The proposed changes involve moving the CCL an average of 2 kilometers northward. This adjustment aims to fulfill a key government initiative focused on fostering cooperation between the military and civilian populations through deregulation. Alongside the CCL shift, authorities are considering removing protective zone designations from an area equivalent to 150 times the size of Yeouido, a major island in Seoul. These measures are intended to promote regional development and offer increased access to areas previously off-limits due to security concerns. The move reflects a broader effort to ease tensions and encourage economic activity near the heavily fortified border with North Korea. Further details regarding implementation and security protocols are expected to be announced.
