Sony has announced it will cease production of physical PlayStation game discs starting January 2028, transitioning to a fully digital distribution model via the PlayStation Store and download codes. The company cites shifting consumer preferences and trends within the entertainment industry as the driving forces behind this decision, noting the increased popularity of digital game purchases. However, this move presents drawbacks for gamers, eliminating the option to buy, sell, trade, or lend physical copies, and increasing reliance on Sony’s digital infrastructure. Concerns arise regarding long-term access to purchased games if the digital storefront were to become unavailable. Simultaneously, Sony will also discontinue sales through the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in July of next year, citing inability to maintain required security updates for these older consoles. Previously purchased digital titles will remain downloadable even after store closure, but the move signals a broader shift in Sony’s approach to game distribution and platform support.
