In 1983, Prime Minister Michael Somare lauded the Bogia people of Madang Province for their significant contribution to Papua New Guinea’s beef production. Approximately 1400 residents across eight villages established a large-scale, community-owned cash crop enterprise focused on cattle ranching. Somare’s praise came during the official opening of the Yakuasa cattle ranch near Bogia on August 10th. The initiative demonstrated a successful model of local ownership and economic self-sufficiency within the PNG agricultural sector. This venture provided a major economic boost to the Bogia area, creating opportunities for its residents. The project highlighted the potential of community-led initiatives in developing PNG’s economy. Somare’s recognition underscored the importance of local participation in national development goals.
