Slovakia’s parliament has approved changes to social security contributions impacting freelancers and specific groups. Effective January, the tax-deductible amount for social security contributions will increase from €200 to €300. This change will benefit not only students and pensioners, but also individuals on maternity or parental leave who earn income through freelance agreements. Professional athletes will face a cap on their social security contributions, calculated based on three times the average wage from two years prior. The amendment aims to adjust the contribution system for various income categories and employment statuses. These adjustments are expected to affect a significant portion of the country’s workforce engaged in freelance or gig economy work. The new law seeks to provide financial relief while also standardizing contribution calculations for high earners in professional sports.
