Senegalese religious singer Ass Dione has been given a six-month suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of fraud. The case stemmed from a scam involving false promises of Spanish visas advertised on Instagram. Dione convinced a jeweler to pay 500,000 CFA francs (approximately $800 USD) as a down payment towards a total of three million CFA francs for a visa and work contract. The promised trip never materialized, leading the jeweler to file a complaint. Dione admitted to receiving the money but claimed to be working with a Spanish intermediary, a defense the prosecution dismissed as part of a recurring pattern of similar scams. Prosecutors had requested a three-month jail sentence and the consolidation of other similar cases against Dione, who is currently facing multiple complaints related to visa schemes to the US and other countries. The court ultimately settled on the suspended sentence.
