Mona Koh, once Singapore’s most prominent “mamasan” – the manager of a hostess club – has died at the age of 80 from kidney failure. Her death occurred at her home on July 15th. Koh rose to notoriety in the 1990s running a popular club frequented by wealthy businessmen and reportedly figures involved in organized crime. In 1994, she was the victim of a shocking shooting that left her paralysed. The incident remains infamous in Singaporean history and fuelled much speculation about its motives. Despite her paralysis, Koh remained a well-known figure, and her life story became a subject of local fascination.
