Hundreds of social media accounts, created with template names, random foreign names, and strings of numbers – often lacking any posts – have been identified as a coordinated “bot army” in Serbia. Public figures and social media influencers are increasingly speaking out against this activity, alleging a concerted effort to suppress dissenting opinions and manipulate public discourse. These accounts rapidly gain followers, suggesting artificial amplification of specific narratives. Those challenging the government report becoming targets of these bots, experiencing coordinated attacks and harassment. They claim the growing visibility of their opposition is directly correlated with increased bot activity, demonstrating a rising level of concern from those allegedly behind the operation. The influencers and public personalities are vowing to continue raising awareness about this phenomenon and counter the spread of disinformation in Serbia.
