Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is facing calls to fulfill a 2016 commitment to support a unified union for tax and customs officials. Ndiaga Soumaré, head of the Customs Inspectors and Officers Association, reminded Faye of his pledge to integrate customs officers into the Siad union. Faye, then a union secretary, had previously voiced support for a strong inter-union to better address sectorial demands within tax and customs administrations. The association is now urging Faye to implement recommendations from the International Labour Organization (ILO) regarding the removal of Article 8 of the customs statute, which currently restricts unionization rights for customs officers.
