Senegal’s National Assembly has approved a revision of Article 37 of the Constitution, concerning asset declarations for public officials. However, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has decided against a separate vote on this specific change. Instead, the revision will be included as part of a broader constitutional reform package. This decision, communicated to the Assembly President on July 30th, 2026, aligns with Article 103 of the Constitution, paving the way for a national referendum. The government intends to extend asset declaration requirements to more high-ranking officials, including the President of the Assembly and the Prime Minister. Furthermore, they propose incorporating asset declarations into the presidential candidate application process to increase transparency. The reform aims for a comprehensive approach to institutional strengthening and a more consistent legal framework.
