A meeting of the “Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains” party in Mbacké, Senegal, descended into violence on Saturday amidst a dispute over party coordination in Touba. Supporters of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye clashed over the appointment of Mamadou Abib Diop, director general of the Société africaine de raffinage (SAR), as the party’s coordinator in Touba, a key religious city. Disgruntled members, including Modou Sall Nay Rér and Moussa Mbaye, disrupted a press conference organized by the MONADD-Kiiraay movement, leading to heated arguments. Reports indicate acts of vandalism occurred within the party premises during the escalating conflict. To quell the unrest, authorities reportedly deployed tear gas or a similar asphyxiating device. The incident highlights early challenges to unity within the newly elected president's party.
