A Senegalese woman, identified as Mame Dieynaba Kane, is facing bigamy charges in Mbour after marrying a second time while still legally married to her first husband. The case came to light when the first husband, a local businessman, discovered her remarriage in Kaolack just weeks after she left their marital home. Kane admitted to the second marriage, claiming illness and a strained relationship led her to believe her first marriage was over, but lacked official divorce documentation. Her first husband alleges the second marriage was a scheme to retain the dowry, amounting to 500,000 FCFA, and is seeking its return along with damages. Prosecutors have characterized the case as clear-cut bigamy and are seeking a strict application of the law. The court has reserved judgment, with a ruling expected on July 16th.
