Senegal’s health sector faces potential disruption as contract health workers begin a series of strikes to protest unpaid housing allowances. The Union of Health and Social Action Contract Workers (SACSASS) announced a phased strike schedule spanning June, escalating throughout the month and extending into 2026. The dispute centers on a perceived inequity in the distribution of housing benefits, initially implemented under the previous administration of Macky Sall, which favored some contract workers over others. SACSASS argues that promises made to rectify this imbalance and fulfill commitments outlined in a social pact have not been kept. Union representatives claim a prolonged administrative blockage is preventing the resolution of the issue and are now appealing to the new government led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for immediate action. They specifically request instructions to the Ministry of Finance to allocate funds for these outstanding payments. The union maintains the strikes will continue until a concrete solution is implemented.
