Senegal’s medical syndicate, Sames, announced a 48-hour strike scheduled for September 8th and 9th, escalating tensions with the government of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The strike stems from longstanding, unresolved demands regarding working conditions, compensation, resource management, training, and healthcare infrastructure. Sames leadership expressed disappointment with the lack of satisfactory responses to their proposals, formulated in late 2023 after a national tour. While the syndicate granted the new administration a period to assess the situation, they claim patience has worn thin and this strike marks the beginning of a potential prolonged labor conflict. The government now faces the challenge of preventing this social front from becoming entrenched, particularly given the multitude of other issues already confronting the Executive. Sames had previously suspended some actions to foster social calm and engaged in discussions for a new social pact.
