A new report details an escalating crackdown on LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal, with at least 320 people detained since February for “acts against nature.” The arrests come after a toughening of laws criminalising homosexuality in Senegal. Detainees are reportedly facing mass arrests, forced HIV testing, and limited access to legal representation, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW). The HIV Justice Network, cited in the report, notes that at least 84 individuals have been charged with “voluntary HIV transmission” based solely on their HIV status. This crackdown has forced many LGBTQ+ people in Senegal to go into hiding, fearing further persecution. The situation highlights growing concerns over human rights and the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal.
