Residents of Taiwan are being warned of a new phishing scam involving fraudulent payment requests disguised as overdue notices from Far Eastern Telecom. Victims receive messages stating an outstanding vehicle parking fee of 120 New Taiwan dollars, containing a malicious link. Clicking this link redirects users to a fake payment page designed to steal their financial information. In one recent case, a victim in Taiwan lost 154,000 New Taiwan dollars—approximately $5,000 USD—within just nine minutes of clicking the link and entering their details. Authorities in Taiwan advise citizens to verify all payment requests directly with Far Eastern Telecom and to avoid clicking suspicious links in text messages. This scam exploits the common practice of automated payment systems and the trust people place in established telecommunications companies. Taiwanese police are actively investigating the incident and urge anyone who believes they may have been targeted to report it immediately.
