International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi stated on Monday that a planned nuclear deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia doesn’t currently include full adoption of the Additional Protocol, which grants the UN nuclear watchdog broad inspection authority. However, he indicated that an agreement close to the protocol’s stipulations is being developed. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia reached a preliminary agreement in July regarding cooperation on civil nuclear power, potentially allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium and construct nuclear reactors with American technology. While not a full commitment to the Additional Protocol, the evolving arrangement aims to provide the IAEA with enhanced inspection capabilities within Saudi Arabia. This comes as both nations work towards finalizing the details of the landmark nuclear cooperation agreement. The specifics of the agreed-upon measures, falling short of the full protocol, remain under discussion.
