Samsung has been ordered to pay Swatch Group US$11.6 million after a London court found the tech giant infringed on the Swiss watchmaker’s copyright. The case centered around Samsung’s smartwatch faces which closely resembled designs from Swatch Group brands like Omega, Longines, Tissot, Breguet, and Blancpain. The judge determined that these "knock-off" designs caused damage to Swatch Group’s commercial interests by appearing on Samsung’s app store. This ruling highlights the importance of design intellectual property even within the digital realm. The decision follows a previous ruling where Samsung was found to have infringed on Swatch’s design rights, but the damages were not yet determined. Swatch Group hailed the verdict as a significant win for protecting its iconic designs. Samsung has not yet commented on the ruling.
