A former campaign manager for Senator Miguel Ángel Calisto has alleged that salmon farming giant Aqua Chile financed the senator through fraudulent consultancy services. Roland Cárcamo testified to prosecutors that a consultancy firm he is affiliated with billed companies, including Aqua Chile, for services that were never rendered. These payments, Cárcamo claims, were intended to secretly fund Senator Calisto’s political activities. Aqua Chile, owned by the Vial Concha group, has a significant presence in the Aysén region, which Calisto represents, and concentrates much of its production there. The company confirmed a commercial relationship with Cárcamo’s consultancy, stating the 2021 services were paid directly to the firm. The allegations raise concerns about potential undue influence and corruption within Chilean politics and the salmon industry.
