While VAR offers potential to minimize errors, the core issue remains the semi-professional status of South African referees. Currently, most referees hold full-time jobs in addition to their officiating duties, impacting their development and consistency. Simply introducing technology won’t address the root cause of inconsistent calls. A focus on professionalizing the refereeing corps—providing full-time roles and enhanced training—is crucial for long-term improvement. Ultimately, better-trained and dedicated referees are essential for fair play and elevating the standard of South African soccer, even with VAR assistance.
