A 57-year-old Russian captain and a 48-year-old Azerbaijani crewman are on trial at the Helsinki District Court, accused of aggravated damage to property and aggravated disruption of telecommunications. The charges stem from an incident on New Year’s Eve when the dry cargo vessel Fitburg, dragging its anchor for over a hundred kilometers, severed an Elisa telecommunications cable. The court proceedings are being followed by Iltalehti. The captain and crewman, described as a “puos” (deckhand/bosun), face accusations of deliberately causing significant disruption. The incident caused substantial damage to critical infrastructure. The captain reportedly became agitated in court, attempting to speak despite intervention from the judge, citing the importance of the matter.
