Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russian author María Stepánova left Moscow and has since relocated to Berlin. She was in New York giving lectures when the invasion began and chose not to return. Stepánova had already completed her first prose book prior to the conflict and has now released her second novel, *Desaparecer* (Disappear), which delves into themes of identity. While currently living in Berlin, she recently visited Barcelona to discuss her experiences and new work. The author’s move was prompted by the shock of the war and has clearly influenced her writing, prompting reflection on her personal and national identity. *Desaparecer* represents a continuation of her literary career, now undertaken from a new geographical and emotional perspective.
