Russia is constructing a new military base in the Karelian Republic, close to the border with Finland. The base, located near the city of Petrozavodsk, is estimated to accommodate up to six thousand soldiers. This development marks a significant increase in military presence in a region that has seen limited Russian military activity for several decades. Finnish broadcaster Yle first reported the construction, highlighting the renewed focus on the area. The move comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Analysts suggest the base aims to strengthen Russia’s military posture in response to Finland’s recent NATO membership application and increased security cooperation with the alliance. The construction signals a potential long-term shift in Russia’s military strategy in the region.
