Russia is rapidly advancing the rollout of its “Rassvet” satellite system, designed as a domestic alternative to SpaceX’s Starlink. According to Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence Deputy Chief Vadym Skibitskyi, the deployment is occurring faster than initially anticipated. Currently, the system is functioning on a limited basis, but its accelerated development raises concerns about Russia’s increasing capabilities in space-based communication. Rassvet aims to provide secure communication channels for the Russian military, potentially minimizing reliance on existing infrastructure vulnerable to disruption. This development signifies a growing emphasis on independent satellite technology within Russia. The speed of deployment suggests a focused effort to counter potential vulnerabilities exposed by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This moves solidifies a developing space race between Russia and the West.
