Romania is nearing the exploitation of natural gas reserves in the Neptun Deep perimeter, but economist Cristian Păun cautions against solely exporting the resource. He argues that exporting the gas without developing local industry will limit economic benefits for Romania. Păun suggests the country risks missing a significant opportunity to double its GDP, with value added generated elsewhere. He criticizes the absence of a clear industrialization strategy and insufficient state involvement in the project. According to Păun, maximizing the project’s benefits requires prioritizing domestic use and industrial growth. The current approach, he warns, could lead to Romania simply selling a valuable resource while other nations reap the economic rewards. This raises concerns about long-term economic development and the potential for a missed opportunity.
