Romania maintains the highest rate of early school leavers within the European Union, despite recording its largest annual improvement in recent years. Eurostat data, analyzed by Euronews and Edupedu, reveals a persistent challenge in educational attainment. In 2023, 15.5% of young Romanians left education or training prematurely. Critically, rural youth are over five times more likely to drop out of school compared to their urban counterparts. This disparity highlights significant inequalities in access to and completion of education across the country. While overall dropout rates are declining, the gap between rural and urban students remains a major concern for Romanian education policy. Further investigation is needed to address the systemic factors contributing to this imbalance.
