Romania’s minority government, led by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, has lost the potential support of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The UDMR, holding 31 parliamentary seats, has decided against joining the governing coalition and will instruct its lawmakers to vote against the current government. Csoma Botond, leader of the UDMR’s deputies, stated he anticipates adherence to this recommendation. This decision effectively removes a potential source of parliamentary backing for Veștea’s government. The UDMR’s withdrawal significantly weakens the government’s position and raises questions about its stability. No immediate plans for a vote of no confidence have been announced, but the government now faces increased challenges in passing legislation.
